The Hindustan Motors (HM) plant at Uttarpara, in Hooghly district of West Bengal, which manufactured the iconic Ambassador car, is a step closer to an ignominious end.

The management has now issued termination notices to many of its managerial staff. Although the plant’s workforce of 2,300 is still unaffected by the ‘pink slips’, as they are called in industry jargon, there was a palpable sense of panic.

According to sources, the letters were issued only to managerial and executive staff and not general workers. “There are around 295 managerial and executive staff members.

Around 250 of them have been issued termination notices — constituting a bulk of the officer-level workforce at the plant,” said an officer, who also received the dreaded letter. Issued since Wednesday, the letter is signed by the plant’s human resources head.
