Despite protests from girl’s family, which belongs to higher caste, Gurleen Kaur (19) and Amarpreet Singh (25) had got married two months ago after a three-year-long love affair.
Around midnight on Tuesday, Guljit’s father, Major Singh, her brothers and other relatives came from village Kotshera to her in-law’s house at Brahmiwal village, about 10 km away.
Armed with guns and swords, they fired at Kaur, her mother-in-law, Kuljit Kaur, 50, and Amarpreet.

Gurleen Kaur and Kuljit died on the spot while Amarpreet escaped with serious bullet injuries and has been admitted to a hospital in Amritsar.

While the father of Amarpreet escaped the fury of the girl’s family as he was away at work, the attackers spared the boy’s grandparents who were at home at the time of attack.

The attackers vented out their wrath on the bodies by severing the arms of Gurleen and Kuljit, the police said.

All the accused are absconding and the police have launched a manhunt to nab them.
