Now, there are 595 horse-drawn carts registered with the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation. The administration has devised a proposal for securing easy-term loans for cart owners to purchase motorised pick-up vehicles like road carriers and trailers or auto-rickshaws.

The horse-driven carts are popular for ferrying household goods within the city. However, animal rights activists have been repeatedly complaining about the cruelty meted out to horses by frequent overloading of carts. There have been certain instances of horses dying due to overloading of carts.
