The All India Bank Employees’ Association (AIBEA) and Women’s Council on Tuesday wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging him to declare International Women’s Day on March 8 as a government and bank holiday every year.

“The whole world is talking about the emancipation and empowerment of women and the steps to be taken thereon,” AIBEA general secretary C H Venkatachalam and Women’s Council convenor Lalita Joshi said in a joint letter to Modi.

“It is significant that women are joining the banks in larger number in the recent years compared to the past, but it is our experience that women who join the banks are facing innumerable problems and difficulties in the matter of their postings to proper places.

“Women are being posted to branches in extreme rural centres where adequate safeguards are not available or where even minimum facilities are not available.” the letter said.
