An improvised explosive device (IED) was recovered from a bus in Maharashtra forcing the government-owned transport to order checks.

The IED was recovered from an ST bus in Apta village near Panvel in the Raigad district in the neighbourhood of Mumbai on Wednesday night.

Following the incident, the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has beefed up security across its depots, stands and buses.

Transport minister Diwakar Raote ordered a check of all the buses in its fleet.

"This is serious and the matter is being investigated," he said.
