IIT-D against burdening students with fee hike

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi on Friday disfavoured the Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry’s proposal for collection of operational costs from the students through tuition fees, saying it would put unnecessary financial burden on them.

“IITs are premier technical institutes that admit the best of students through a rigorous selection process. What is wrong in providing subsidised education to such students? We increased tuition fee only a few years ago,” said IIT-D officiating director Kshitij Gupta when his comments were sought on the proposal.

Gupta, however, made it clear that it was only IIT-Delhi’s view that the institute should not start recovering operational costs from its students.
