The engineer was identified as Subatit Basu, who is an alumni of the IIT Powai in Mumbai. He had returned from the US recently and was working in a software firm in Hinjewadi, which houses campuses of IT majors like Infosys and Wipro.

In the early hours, he and his sister Priyadarshini Basu (24), had reached a petrol pump at Bavdhan where he killed her, and later tried to end his own life.

However, the people nearby woke up by the screaming and rushed to the spot. They managed to save Subatit’s life and admitted him to a hospital.

Subatit is currently undergoing treatment at Yashawantrao Chavan hospital in Pimpri. The motive behind the murder is still not clear, and the Pune police detectives are waiting to question Subatit once the doctors give permission to do so.

Hinjewadi was recently in news over a gangrape of a MBA graduate, who had returned with her husband from the US. The same area also witnessed another gangrape, this time by two Army jawans, on a young college graduate. In both cases, the culprits have been arrested.

Concerned over the rising crime in Pune, which is not only the IT hub but also recognised as Maharashtra’s cultural capital, the state home minister R R Patil has convened a meeting of all people’s representatives and the top police and government officers in Pune over the weekend.
