Keen to find out “deliverables” before they meet in New York in September, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif have asked their special envoys to start informal talks, supplementing the structured dialogue between the officials of the two countries.

Sharif’s special envoy Shahryar Khan is currently in New Delhi and is understood to have started informal talks with his Indian counterpart, Satinder K Lambah.

He also called on Prime Minister and External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid on Friday, apart from having a meeting with National Security Advisor Shiv Shankar Menon and Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai.

Khan, a former Foreign Secretary of Pakistan, delivered a letter from Sharif to Singh. The letter conveyed “Pakistan’s sincere desire to move forward on improving relations with India”.

Lambah, Singh’s Special Envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan, and Khan launched the informal talks just three days after New Delhi and Islamabad agreed to restart the paused dialogue between the officials of the two countries.
