Pune: 8, including students, injured as bus overturns

Eight persons, including some students of a school in Pune's Pimpri Chinchwad, suffered injuries after their school bus overturned at 9 pm on Friday, a police official said. The bus had 32 occupants, most of them students of Jnana Prabhodini Navanagar Vidyalaya, and was returning from Raigad Fort when the incident took place near Gharoshiwadi off Raigad-Mangaon road, he said.

Shameful, says Digvijaya on release of 6 convicts in Rajiv Gandhi assassination case

Congress Rajya Sabha MP Digvijaya Singh has said the release of the killers of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi was "shameful".

The Supreme Court on Friday set free Nalini Sriharan and five other remaining convicts who are serving life term for about three decades in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, noting that its earlier order releasing another convict A G Perarivalan was equally applicable to them.

ED instrument of 'harassment, torture, oppression': Cong on Raut's bail order

The Congress on Friday hit out at the Centre over a special court describing the arrest of Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut in a money laundering case as "illegal", and alleged the Enforcement Directorate is an instrument of "harassment, torture, oppression".

A special court in Mumbai, while granting bail to Raut in a money laundering case by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), had said his arrest was "illegal" and was an instance of "witch-hunt".

Raut stepped out of jail on Wednesday after his bail.

At a press conference at the AICC headquarters here, Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi read out the portions of the court order in which it had criticised the handling of the case.

"Startling, terrible, shocking, deplorable findings have come to light about the conduct of ED," Singhvi said.

NIA chargesheets 11 in Jharkhand CPI (Maoist) case

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Friday filed a charge sheet against 11 persons, including two arrested and nine absconding persons, in a case pertaining to recovery of live ammunition from a CPI (Maoist) camp at Rud village in the hilly and forested area of Jharkhand on September 1, 2017.

The case was initially registered at Garu Latehar police station in Jharkhand before the NIA took over the probe in 2021.

Biden says 'life of the planet' at stake in climate crisis

President Joe Biden told the COP27 conference Friday the "very life of the planet" is at stake in the climate crisis and gave an assurance the United States is on track to slash carbon emissions.

"The climate crisis is about human security, economic security, environmental security, national security and and the very life of the planet," he told an audience at the conference in Egypt.

ED attaches assets of Indian entity in PMLA case involving Rolls Royce

Assets worth Rs 8.7 crore have been attached under the anti-money laundering law in a case of alleged corruption involving London-based Rolls Royce, which is said to have paid around Rs 80 crore as commission to an agent to bag contracts from public sector undertakings such as HAL, ONGC and GAIL, the ED said on Friday.

A provisional order under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) was issued against Mumbai-based Turbotech Energy Services International Private Limited (Turbotech) and Ashok Patni.

The case pertains to an instance where Rolls Royce "admitted that it had made commission payments to Ashok Patni and his associated entities in violation of the integrity pact in respect of various purchase orders placed before ONGC, HAL and GAIL".

Hate speeches: SC discharges Uttarakhand govt, DGP from list of parties in contempt plea

The Supreme Court on Friday discharged the Uttarakhand government and the police chief from a list of parties in a contempt plea filed by activist Tushar Gandhi pertaining to alleged inaction in cases of hate speeches made at religious assemblies in Haridwar in the state and the national capital last year.

A bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice Hima Kohli took note of the submissions of the Uttarakhand government that a plea related to the hate speeches made at Haridwar is pending before another bench and hence it cannot be continued here.

"The state of Uttarakhand and the Director General of Police of the state are accordingly discharged," the bench said.

Two Maoists killed in gun battle with police in Odisha

At least two Maoists were killed in an exchange of fire between the red rebels and security personnel in Odisha’s Koraput district, a senior police officer said on Friday.

The gun battle took place on the intervening night of November 10 and 11 at a place under Baipariguda police station limit of Koraput district.

“We have found bodies of two unidentified male Maoists along with certain materials,” DIG Rajesh Pundit told reporters here.

Several other Maoists might have suffered injuries in the gun battle, he said.
