Overhauling of the first two tanks had been completed at the 505 Army base workshop in Delhi last month, an army officer said. Carried out at a cost of Rs 4 crore for each tank, overhauling extends the tank’s life by 15 years and save Rs 14 crore for the exchequer on every tank. As India has more than 300 T-90 tanks at the moment and indigenous servicing contributes to significant cost savings. Officers and engineers were given special training for the overhaul.
In 2001, India bought 310 T-90S tanks in a Rs 3,625 crore deal. These tanks are in use by two strike corps—Ambala-based 2 Corps and Bhopal based 21 Corps.
In 2007 India ordered another 347 T-90 tanks from Russia in a Rs 4,900 crore deal as indigenous production could not start.
