The UPA’s report card released Tuesday claims that the internal security situation in the country is showing “distinct signs of improvement”, though the Manmohan Singh government suffered huge embarrassment recently due to the high profile kidnapping of public servants in Naxalism-affected states of Chhattisgarh and Odisha.
That apart, a piece of land acquired in Delhi for setting up National Intelligence Grid (NATGRID) headquarters has been showcased in the report marking UPA-II’s third anniversary, as the highpoint of the central government’s achievement on counter terrorism front.
The NATGRID will be the repository of intelligence that would be shared with other government stakeholders for taking action on internal security matters. The report states that National Investigation Agency (NIA) raised to fight terrorism has frozen 18 bank accounts to choke terror funding. Of the 34 cases, the agency has filed chargesheet in 20.
Though no terror strikes have taken place in the recent past, the union home ministry has been fighting fire of late. The latest attack came from the states which have accused home ministry of usurping their federal powers through NCTC, a new body the government intends to establish to wage war against terrorism.
