Internet calling scares Vodafone into slashing rates

Expecting a potential threat to their revenue from companies like Skype and Google Hangout, that offer voice calling over internet, domestic telecom companies have started slashing international roaming and calling rates.

Vodafone India on Monday reduced the international roaming rates for the second time since June 2012, when it first cut charges by 60 per cent.

The firm launched international roaming packs for both prepaid and post-paid customers, offering a discount of 95 per cent on data charges and up to 78 per cent on voice calls.

Telecom sector observers say that it would be expected if a tariff war broke out among telecom firms in the international roaming space due to increasing number of overseas travelers.
