New Delhi: Congress on Monday said President Donald Trump's decision to unleash US airpower on Iran "makes a mockery of his own calls" for the continuation of talks with Tehran, while finding fault with the Modi government for "not unequivocally" criticising or condemning the American bombing and Israel's aggression.

General Secretary (Communications) Jairam Ramesh said Congress reiterates the "absolute essentiality of immediate diplomacy and dialogue" with Iran.

"President Trump's decision to unleash US airpower on Iran makes a mockery of his own calls for the continuation of talks with Iran. The Government of India must demonstrate greater moral courage than it has so far. The Modi Government has unequivocally neither criticised nor condemned the US bombing and Israel's aggression, bombings and targeted assassinations," he posted on X.

He said it has also maintained a "deafening silence" on the "genocide" being perpetrated on the Palestinians in Gaza.

On Sunday, five Left parties – CPI(M), CPI, CPI(ML)L, RSP and Forward Bloc – condemned the US’ bombing of Iran in “grave violation” of Iran’s sovereignty and the UN Charter.

It warned that it will “inflame global tensions, destabilise West Asia and have severe economic repercussions” and asked the Modi government to abandon its “pro-US, pro-Israel” foreign policy stance and join global efforts to stop the war.
