Srinagar: Two unidentified terrorists were killed on Saturday as the Army said it foiled an infiltration attempt along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Keran sector of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.
The operation comes amid a rise in infiltration attempts this year following Operation Sindoor — launched by India on May 7 in response to the April 24 Pahalgam terror attack in which 25 tourists and a local were killed in the Baisaran meadow.
The Chinar Corps of the Army said in a post on X that “two terrorists have been neutralised by the security forces in the ongoing operation,” adding that a search of the area was underway.
Earlier, Chinar Corps – in another post wrote on X that, ” On 07 Nov 2025, based on specific intelligence input from agencies, regarding infiltration attempt, a joint operation was launched in Keran sector of Kupwara. Alert troops spotted suspicious activity and challenged which resulted in terrorists opening indiscriminate fire. Contact established and terrorists trapped. Op continues.”
Security officials said infiltration attempts along the LoC have significantly increased since Operation Sindoor. Several groups are believed to have been pushed from across the border before the onset of winter when heavy snowfall seals traditional routes.
During Operation Sindoor, India said it destroyed nine major terror launch pads in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK), targeting Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed, and Hizbul Mujahideen facilities. Over 100 terrorists were reportedly killed in the strikes, which led to a four-day limited-scale conflict between India and Pakistan before a ceasefire agreement was signed on May 10.
“This year has witnessed one of the highest numbers of infiltration attempts in recent years. The renewed push shows efforts to replenish terror ranks depleted by counter-terrorism operations inside Kashmir,” a senior police official said. “Intelligence assessments further reveal that Pakistan's Border Action Teams (BATs) have been redeployed across PoJK, signaling potential cross-border attacks on Indian positions.”
“This marks one of the most concerted post-Operation Sindoor escalations, suggesting Pakistan's renewed strategy to export instability into the Union Territory,” he added.
Saturday’s encounter in Keran follows similar infiltration bids foiled in recent months in Machil and Tangdhar sectors, indicating heightened activity along the Kupwara stretch of the LoC as snow begins to accumulate in the higher reaches.
