As the prime minister is set to embark on a visit to Japan on Saturday, a group of IPS probationers have been disallowed from going to the land of rising sun for specialised training.

However, 100-odd IPS probationers, who are undergoing training at the National Police Academy, will now head to a less expensive destination – Singapore. The home ministry had, on April 5, cleared a trip to Japan and Singapore for the probationers as part of their phase-II training.

Sources in the ministry said the academy had informed the government that it does not have enough money to fund the group’s travel to Japan. After taking the home ministry’s permission, sources said, the academy changed its plans.
