In a move to bring together the rivals of the BJP and replicate the success of the Bihar byelections, the Janata Dal (United) on Wednesday announced that it would put an end to its anti-Congress stance while simultaneously uniting the old Janata Parivar and the Third Front.

Lauding Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad and JD(U) veteran leader Nitish Kumar for putting aside their differences to unite against the BJP, JD(U) president Sharad Yadav called for a grand alliance against Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government.

“We have fought the Congress and succeeded. Now we have to fight BJP. No one should underestimate us,” Yadav said. The JD(U) president recalled the governments headed by V P Singh, H D Deve Gowda and I K Gujaral and declared that efforts would be made to cobble them together.

Yadav pointed out that such a move would bring together socially or economically weaker sections of society.
