All India Gems and Jewellery Trade Federation (GJF) on Monday criticised a proposal by Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) asking retailers in major cities to issue a certicard for each gold item sold, calling it “cumbersome, impractical, expensive and time consuming”.
In a strongly worded letter sent to Union Minister for Consumer Affairs K V Thomas, GJF chairperson Haresh Soni asked the ministry to review the proposal that asks retail jewellers to issue a certicard with each piece of jewel sold, along with a photograph of its unique identification mark.
At a time when jewellers are gearing up for the Deepavali season, Soni told Deccan Herald that the proposal “will not only create problems for the jewellers, but also
the consumers who may have to bear additional expenses of Rs 125-250 for the certicard.” While the proposal for issuing certificates to diamonds is “alright”, Soni said giving certicards on mass-produced small gold ornaments is “impossible”.
