Jammu and Kashmir police on Friday claimed to have seized drugs worth crores from a truck travelling from Muzaffarabad in Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir (PoK) to this side as part of cross Line of Control (LoC) trade.
Senior Superintdent Police (SSP) Baramulla Imtiyaz Hussain said They said they had a specific information about the fact that a large quantity of narcotic drugs were to be carried by a PoK borne truck towards this side by means of Cross LoC trade.
"Thereafter in the premises of Trade Facilitation Centre Salamabad in Uri while conducting the search of a truck which had come from PoK , police recovered 25 kgs of narcotic drugs which appear to be heroine. The drugs were hidden in boxes purportedly to contain mercantile goods," he told DH.

Pertinently, the cross-LoC trade between divided parts of Kashmir began in October 2008. The trade takes place four times a week through the Salamabad in Kashmir and the Chakan-Da- Bagh crossing point in Jammu region. However, the trade which began as the major confidence-building measures between the two neighbouring countries has hit the rough weather several times.
In January 2014, police had recovered 100 kg of brown sugar from a truck coming from PoK as part of the cross-LoC trade. Similarly, in February 2015 Police had seized 305 packets of narcotics from a truck coming from Muzaffarabad during a routine check in Uri. In August 2013, the trade was suspended when police recovered cocaine worth Rs 10 crore from a truck, at Sheeri in Uri sector.
Intelligence agencies have been from time to time warning that some traders doing business across the LoC were diverting money to fund separatists and militants in Jammu and Kashmir. “Some persons in the garb of cross-LoC trade have been indulging in providing help to militants for fomenting trouble in the state. They divert money to activists of militant outfits including the Lashkar-e-Toiba and HM,” a senior police officer said.
Pertinent to mention here, the National investigation Agency (NIA) has already filed a case against some LoC traders for shipping funds to militant groups operational in Jammu and Kashmir under the garb of cross LoC trade.
NIA authorities claim there has been inflow of crores of rupees as funds to the various militant groups in the state since the commencement of the cross LOC trade in 2008 between PoK and Jammu and Kashmir. The NIA even accused the Pakistani truck drivers of sending in weapons and other lethal ammunitions in to Jammu and Kashmir under the garb of the trade.
