At least 15 passengers were injured, two of them seriously, when eight coaches of Kanniyakumari-Bengaluru City Express derailed near Vellore district on Friday morning.

Southern Railway sources said of the eight derailed coaches, four capsized when the train was running between Somanayakkanpatti and Patchur station of Bangalore Division at around 4.15 am. However, there was no loss of life.

Two passengers with serious injuries were admitted to the nearby government hospital at Tirupathur while rest of them with minor injuries were treated as outpatients. Police and rescue personnel rushed to the spot and pulled the passengers out from the capsized coaches safely.

Special buses and a train from Jolarpettai were engaged to ferry passengers to Bengaluru. "Our initial investigation revealed that the mishap occurred due to a big crack in the rails", a Railway official said.

The accident prompted Southern Railway to cancel as many as 11 trains between Chennai-Bengaluru, Jolarpettai-Bengaluru and Arakonam-Bengaluru.

The Chennai–Mysore Shatabdi Express was partially cancelled between Jolarpettai and Mysore.

However, Coimbatore-Rajkot express train was diverted via Tirupattur, Jolarpettai, Katpadi and Renigunta.

Cranes and earth moving equipment were involved in removing the derailed coaches from the tracks. “Train services on this route are expected to resume on Friday night itself,” a Railway official said.
