A farmers' organisation today opposed Cauvery Monitoring Committee's direction to release four tmc of water to Tamil Nadu over the next fortnight.

G Made Gowda, President of Raithara Hitharakshana Samithi, said the Karnataka government should not release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu as the neighbouring state is getting heavy rainfall.

"If Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar releases water to Tamil Nadu, farmers will launch an agitation," he warned.

Gowda also questioned the state Chief Secretary's silence over the issue which, according to him, only raised doubts in farmers' mind.

At a meeting of the Committee at New Delhi today, Karnataka was asked to release four thousand million cubic (TMC) ft of water to Tamil Nadu between November 1 and 15.
