10 killed, 36 hurt in Gadag road accident

Ten people were killed and 36 injured when a speeding truck rammed the tractor they were travelling in to attend a wedding, on Gadag-Mundargi State Highway near Dambal in the district on Wednesday.

The deceased have been identified as: Hanumantappa Kenchappa Poojara (35) of Dambal, Prashant Tayappa Kengara (6) and Prajwal Tayappa Kengara (2) from Abbigeri in Ron taluk, Sanjana Gudadappa Sunkamma (8) and Sudeep Gudadappa Sunkamma (6) from Magala in Bellary district, Renuka Ningappa Hadimani (26) and Muttappa Mallappa Hadimani (30) from Nagasamudra in Gadag taluk, and Annapoorna Shankrappa Poojara (35) and Hanamappa Kenchappa Poojara (30) from Mangaloora in Yalburga of Koppal district.

Wedding party

They were part of the 46-member wedding party on its to way to attend the wedding at the bride’s place in Kandagalapur in Bellary district, police said.

When the speeding truck hit the tractor from behind, it toppled and fell off the road into a ditch.

Eight persons, including four children, died on the spot and two others succumbed to injuries in the hospital, said the police.

Among the injured, 16 people, who are critical, have been shifted to the Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) in Hubli.

Negligent driving

Negligent driving on the part of the truck driver has been blamed for the accident and the driver has been absconding, the police added.
