Hanur (Chamarajanagar Dist): Gouthamamma, a 102-year-old woman from Doddalatturu near here in Chamarajanagar district, who tasted victory in her maiden electoral foray in the recently concluded gram panchayat elections, has joined Congress in the presence of District In-charge Minister H S Mahadev Prasad at Male Mahadeshwara Hills on Sunday.

The centenarian urged the minister to suggest her name for the president’s post of the gram panchayat.

Reacting to her request, the minister said that an appropriate decision will be taken after the reservation list for the president and vice president posts is announced. In the panchayat elections, the grand old lady of Doddalatturu had bagged 354 votes and defeated her nearest rival Neelamma by a margin of 160 votes.
