About 18 objections have been filed against ward reservation list announced by the State Government, ahead of the polls to the Madikeri City Municipal Council (CMC).
The Government reconstituted the wards from 31 to 23 and announced the reservation list last month. A few petitioners have accused that the reservation list has been announced so as to help the Congress.
JD(S) district unit President V P Shashidhar said, “Women reservation should have been distributed among different wards. However, from 1 to 9, in the heart of the city, have been reserved for women. If women are given priority in just one part of the city, it would be difficult to carry out development works.”
CMC former member T M Ayyappa said, “We do not have objections to reservation for women. However, why is it concentrated in just one part of the CMC and not distributed?”
The government should have published ward-wise voters list before releasing the reservation list. Only temporary voters list has been published so far, he pointed out.
50 pc for women
For the first time in the history of Kodagu, 50 per cent of the seats have been reserved for women in the CMC. Accordingly, 12 wards have been reserved for women, Ayyappa said.
