Two undertrials escaped from the Ramdurg sub-jail in Belagavi district by breaking the window grills in the wee hours of Wednesday.
SP B R Ravikanthegowda has suspended a head constable on duty for dereliction of duty.
Suresh Sharanappa Chalavadi of Mudhol was arrested for motorbike theft and Santosh Shivanna Nandyal, a resident of Honnalli village in Vijayapura, was arrested in connection with thefts reported in Ramdurg, Bailhongal and Savadatti taluks.
Both were lodged at the sub-jail in Ramdurg with 10 other undertrials. The duo were lodged in cell number 4. The two broke open window grills of the toilet and escaped when other inmates were asleep, official sources said.
DySP MahaningNadgavi and Police Inspector Gopalkrishnagowadar visited the sub-jail and inspected the premises.
Police have launched a manhunt for the duo. A few months ago an undertrial had escaped from the same sub-jail.
