Thirty-nine lakh vehicles in Karnataka will have to be scrapped if the government notifies a new rule prohibiting the use of old vehicles.

As per the rule, private vehicles aged above 20 years and commercial vehicles (yellow number plate) aged over 15 years have to be scrapped. Of the 2.46 crore vehicles in Karnataka, about 39 lakh have to be scrapped to comply with the rule or pay green tax.

The rule, proposed by the Centre, has already seen much opposition. However, officials believe it is necessary to reduce pollution.
