Medical Education Minister Dr Sharanprakash Patil on Saturday said his department has ordered 50,000 anti-venom vials to treat snake bite cases.

They will be available in a week’s time at the referral hospitals attached to four government medical colleges of the State.

Speaking to press persons after inspecting the amenities at the Government General Hospital and the ongoing civil work of 450-bed referral hospital here, Patil said there is a severe shortage of vials used to treat snake bite cases as only two companies are manufacturing the drug.

Asked about the Bidar Institute of Medical Sciences working without a full-time director, Patil said the department has received several applications and steps would be initiated soon to appoint a full-time director. Dr P A Shepur of Gulbarga presently holds the additional charge.

He expressed displeasure over lack of cleanliness and amenities at the government hospital and said the existing building was quite old and ill-equipped causing difficulties in offering facilities like CT scan. In view of the impending problems, the government has sanctioned a 450-bed referral hospital.
