Mangaluru: The organs of a 55-year-old man who was declared brain dead following an internal brain bleeding, were harvested at thw Yenepoya Medical College to give a fresh lease of life to people.

The patient was admitted to Yenepoya Medical College Hospital on January 19 following a fall that resulted in an internal brain bleeding. Despite the best efforts of the treating team, the man was declared brain dead after a thorough evaluation. The team counselled his family regarding the situation and the possibility of organ donation.

Knowing that the patient had expressed his desire to donate his organs, the man's family made a decision to honour his wishes.

The organ retrieval procedure was successfully conducted, and two kidneys and corneas were retrieved. One of the kidneys and both the corneas will be utilised at the hospital and the other kidney has been allocated to KMC Hospital in Mangaluru.

Yenepoya Hospital has appreciated the generosity and courage displayed by the family during the challenging time and said that the decision will give a new lease of life to multiple individuals and serves as an inspiring example of importance of organ donation.
