As many as 66 fully vaccinated students of SDM College of Medical Sciences & Hospital at Sattur in Dharwad have tested positive for Covid-19, prompting authorities to quarantine them in the institution for the next 15 days.

Following the major outbreak, the district administration sealed two student hostels and asked all the students and staff of the hospital to get tested for the contagious disease that is on the wane at the moment but still circulating.

While some of the students were having mild symptoms, many are asymptomatic. Officials said the condition of the students is stable.

Deputy Commissioner Nitesh Patil, who rushed to the college with a team of health officials after getting to know of the outbreak, said the students had participated in a college event on Nov 17, where many of them ended up contracting the virus.

There are 400 students in the college and tests have been conducted on 300, of which 66 students tested positive. The results of the remaining 100 students would be known by Thursday evening, he said.

The DC asked college authorities not to show any laxity in getting themselves tested and see that the virus does not spread.

He also directed police to keep a strict vigil on the students who have been quarantined.
