A 70-year-old woman fell into a 100-foot deep open well while returning home after answering the nature’s call in the open at Atharga village in Indi taluk of the district around 7 am on Monday.

As the woman, Mahadevi Kanase (Samagar), screamed for help, villagers rushed to the well but could not retrieve her. They then called the ‘108’ ambulance service as well as the fire brigade.

An ambulance and a fire tender reached the spot soon. A firefighter, clinging onto a ladder, then went down into the well. He was given enough ropes and other necessary materials to lift up the woman. Mahadevi was finally retrieved out of the well almost two hours after she had fallen into it.

Minor injuries
The old woman suffered minor injuries but was alert when lifted out of the well.
She was taken to a private hospital in Vijayapura where doctors attending to her said she had suffered minor injuries near the head and on the legs, Gram Panchayat member Sharanu Gunaki told Deccan Herald.

The woman would be subjected to CT scan and other tests to ascertain if she had suffered any deep injuries, he added.

The woman’s brother is a retired tahsildar and runs a petrol bunk near Kolhar village. He has settled in Bilagi town of Bagalkot district.

There is no toilet in the woman’s home, as is the case with most houses in the village.
