8 killed in Jewargi accident

Eight people, including four members of a family, were killed on the spot in a head-on collision between an NEKRTC bus and an autorickshaw they were travelling by near Mandewal-Nedalgi Cross on the Humnabad-Bijapur National Highway 218 ‘E’ under the Nelogi police station limits of Jewargi taluk, about 70 km from here on Friday.

The deceased have been identified as Venkatesh (40), his wife Shantamma (30), their children Rupesh (18), Raddy (6), Roopa (8), Nagalingamma (35), her husband Mallappa (41), and Mallikarjun Haligeri (18), all residents of Ambedkar Nagar in Yadgir city.

On way to pilgrim centre

They were proceeding in the autorickshaw to the pilgrim centre Ghattargi in Afzalpur taluk to have a darshan of goddess Bhagyavanti when the accident occurred.

The bus from Bijapur was bound for Gulbarga. The post mortem of the bodies were conducted at the taluk general hospital in Jewargi.

NEKRTC has announced a compensation of Rs 50,000 to the dependents of each of the deceased.

It has released Rs 15,000 as immediate relief for funeral expenses. District in-charge minister Qamarul Islam, legislators Dr Ajay Singh and Allamprabhu Patil visited the hospital.
