The Bharat bandh did not dampen the spirits of meat sellers in the taluk on Thursday. Many made brisk sales catering to a large number of customers eager to satiate their desire for meat on ‘Varsha Todaku,’ which fell on Thursday.
Varsha Todaku is a day when meat is the main course of diet. The day is special as it takes place the day after the Ganesha festival, after the holy month of ‘Shravana’ (according Hindu calendar), during which no meat is concerned.
To increase the woes of meat lovers, this year, the ‘Shravana’ is followed by another holy month, the ‘Adhika Masa’, leaving the ‘Varsha Todaku’ as a valuable window of opprtunity to consume meat with impunity. People from rural areas visited the town early in the morning to buy their choice of meat, but following the bandh, many faced problems travelling to nearby towns.
Other, who had anticipated the bandh, had purchased chickens on Wednesday. Nevertheless, in expectation of good business, meat shops in town opened their shops as early as 4 am in the morning.
Many meat shops, instead of cutting cleaned chicken into pieces, sold them directly to the customers.
Demand was so great that few customers didn’t create a fuss over whole meat not cut into pieces and paid the high prices demanded by the sellers.
After the meat was sold, however, many sellers closed their stores and extended their support to the bandh.
