He was speaking at the inauguration of state-level technical fest ‘Aakar-2010’ organised by the Department of Civil Engineering at National Institute of Engineering (NIE) in the city on Friday.
Advising students to inculcate ethical values and professional integrity, Chakravarthy said that code of practise plays a great role. He said that engineers play a very important role in disaster management. Chakravarthy said that failures are a great lesson to learn newer technology. He advised students to read about projects which have failed so that they might not commit the same mistakes.
Civil engineering has made rapid advancements in the 20th century, he said. However, he suggested students to absorb the fundamentals. If too much computerisation is used, then the tendency to deviate from the fundamentals will be more.
Economical innovation
Expressing the need for developing low cost shelters, Chakravarthy said that innovation has to be economical. He said that adaptation to using newer material is important.
Advocating the rapid developments of civil engineering in the 21st century, he said that curriculum should also be developed to keep in touch with the newer available techniques.
About 130 students from 30 colleges across state, are participating in the fest.
Several technical competitions were conducted as part of the event.
Abhishek P V and Deepak S T of R V College of Engineering (RVCE), Bangalore won the first place in ‘Mrinmayi’, a geotechnical engineering event.
Nirupakumar N and Shashank B S of Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering (SJCE) were the runners-up. Janakaraj M of SJCE and Lalanthi M C of NIE won the first and second place respectively for ‘Vinyasa’, AutoCAD 3D Modelling competition.
Prithiviraj P, Vikranth K and Abhijit of RVCE won the first place for ‘VAJRA’, a cube strength contest, while Abhishek, Adarsh and Shivraj of RVCE had to be satisfied for the second place. Thrivikram, Nakul and Santhosh of NIE won the first prize in Srushti, a creative modelling contest.
While Akshay, Sanganagowda Patil and Gourav of Dr P G Halakatti College of Engineering and Technology, Bijapur won the second prize.
