A youth threw acid on a teacher for refusing to marry him, at Kokkanur near Malebennur on Friday. A student who was accompanying the teacher at the time of the incident also sustained burns.

The victims are Kavita, the teacher at a private school, and Raghu of Hindasaghatta, a UKG student in the same school.

Police said the suspect, Mahesh from Konanatale of Honnali taluk, was allegedly upset after Kavita’s family in the same village refused his proposal to marry her two months back. He came to Kokkanur on Friday, where Kavita stayed with a relative, and met her when she was returning from school. He threw acid on her and fled the scene.

Both Kavita and Raghu suffered burns on head and face, said the Malebennur police have arrested Mahesh.
