Acting on a tip off, the police under the aegis of DySP V Govindaiah along with Fisheries Department raided the lorry and seized the poisonous fish worth Rs 3.9 lakh. Javed Ali has been remanded to judicial custody.
According to the Environment Protection Act of 1986 the pisciculture of the African catfish or sale of the fish has also been banned. An imprisonment of up to five year or a fine Rs 5 lakh and can be levelled on the person found guilty of the offence, said Fisheries Department Assistant Director R S Nagendra Prasad.
The pisciculture of the African catfish in the ponds and tanks has negative effect as these fishes destroy the other aquatic life. Further these fishes are fed meat of dead animals and silk worms. Consumption of these fishes can cause health problems, he added.
The seized fishes were buried near Nayanahalli. Rural Police Station Circle Inspector Venkatesh, Sub-Inspector Prashant, officials from Fisheries Department and police staff took part in the raid.
