Agriculture University near Shimoga?

Speaking after inaugurating ‘Krishi Mela-2009’ in the city on Sunday, he said that the proposed university will undertake study and research of problems faced by farmers in Malnad, coastal and Central Karnataka.

Shimoga, Chikmagalur, Chitradurga, Davangere, Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts will be brought under the purview of the proposed university. The Minister said that he would discuss the issue with Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa, and apprise him of the need for an agriculture study and research centre in the region.

Ravindranath said that food production in the State is expected to be normal this year, as the monsoon was active in the State from August. He also said that 75 per cent susbidy is being offered to farmers of Gulbarga and Raichur districts, where rainfall is low, for the fresh purchase of sowing seeds. “Sowing activities have commenced in the region where pulses are grown. And sufficient stock of fertiliser is maintained in the State.”
