She was on a vacation to visit her daughter, a psychiatrist in London. Vijayalakshmi was rushed to a hospital when she suffered a cardiac arrest, but in vain.
She was appointed the director of the institute in September 2006 and was instrumental in introducing many reforms. Vijayalakshmi was born in Akkihebbal in K R Pet taluk of Mandya district. Sources in AIISH said her body may be flown to Mysore by Monday or Tuesday.
