All India Fide rated chess tourney begins

Including Grand Masters, International Masters, around 400 players from across 22 states in the country are taking part in the tourney.

Inaugurating the tourney by moving a pawn, Karnataka Bank non Executive Chairman Ananthakrishna said chess has a glorious history compared to the games with modern origin. The history of chess begins from the period of Epics, he said.

Game of mind

Corporation Bank General Manager A Mohan Rao said chess is a game of mind and intellect. Mayor M Shankar Bhat said chess is both a game and an art. “There is both politics and a war strategy in it,” he added. He announced a contribution of Rs 50,000 for the tournament on behalf of Mangalore City Corporation.

United Karnataka Chess Association President Achutananda Reddy said the association would organise a State-level fide rated under-15 championship at Belgaum. M R Vasudev presided.

M S Thejakumar from Karnataka who was declared International Grand Master (IM) recently, was felicitated.

SKDCA President M S Gururaj, Secretary Lidiya D’Cunha, DK Union of Working Journalists’ President Harsha and others were present.
