He was speaking as a resource person at an awareness programme organised as part of the Pisciculture Farmers Day organised by the Hinterland Fisheries unit in association with the Agriculture University Agricultural Research Centre here on Saturday. He said that the topography of Malnad region, which has sufficient water resources, is suitable for pisciulture. Farmers can produce ornamental fish and prawns as an alternative farming in the region. Women can start pisciulture in front of their house itself and earn profit, he added.

In his inaugural speech, Agriculture University Agricultural Research Centre Fisheries Expert Dr Umashankar opined that the fish population is being destroyed due to the excessive use of chemicals in agricultural fields. Farmers should adopt scientific methods to preserve nature and also should start pisciulture.

Fisheries Department Officer Kuppanna said that farmers should make use of all scheme benefits of the State government.  Fish farmer Naresh presided over the programme. Taluk Vimukti SHG Co-ordinator Yathish K Balanga, farmers Shivaprasad, Sureshchandra, Fisheries Experts Vedamoorthi, Dr Vishnuvardhan and Harish were present.
