There are 64,518 anganawadi centres in Karnataka. Of these, 58,317 are located in rural areas, 3,510 in urban areas and 2,961 in hilly regions.
Even though a committee has been constituted to look into issues plaguing the anganawadi centres in the State, the government has not done anything about this.
Briefing reporters on Thursday, members of the Karnataka Anganwadi Workers’ Association said that, be it malnutrition among children, ration card distribution, setting up monitoring committees for anganawadi centres, uniforms, medical checkups, basic infrastructure or providing nutritious food, a lot of work needs to be done in the area.
The Women and Child Development Department has not inquired into the reasons for malnutrition, the Association claimed.
Change timings
The State Anganwadi Workers’ Association has asked the government to change the working hours of anganwadi centres across the State from 9.30 am to 1.30 pm, as opposed to the present timing of 9.30 am to the 4 pm in practice.
The government has to take action against officials and workers who are not doing the job on time, president G R Shivashankar said.
