Anganwadi workers took out a protest rally in the City on Thursday, and urged the State government to drop the Yettinahole project.
The procession went all the way from the Karavali Utsava Maidan till the office of the deputy commissioner. It was flagged off by the Mangaluru City Corporation Mayor Jacinta Vijaya Alfred. The workers submitted their memorandum to the deputy commissioner.
Legislator Capt Ganesh Karnik, Deputy Mayor Purushottam Chitrapur, Bishop’ House representative Fr J B Crasta and others were part of the procession.
Resolutions
Former legislator and Netravati Nadi Samrakshana Samiti Convener Vijaykumar Shetty, who addressed the protesters, said that a resolution opposing the Yettinahole project has been passed at the Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat.
“A similar resolution has been passed at the City Corporation and many gram panchayats in the district. Even as many elected representatives are opposing the project, the State government turned a deaf ear to the opposition,” he criticised.
He further accused the government of implementing the project for the benefit of some people. He also urged the government to scrap the project, considering the welfare of the people of the district.
Anganwadi Workers’ Association district unit president Vishalakshi, All College Students Union legal advisor Dinakar Shetty, Congress leader P V Mohan and others were present as part of the protest.
Karavali bandh
The Netravati Nadi Samrakshana Samiti vice-president M G Hegde, who spoke on the occasion, warned the State government of calling a bandh in the coastal districts again, if the government continued to neglect the anti-Yettinahole project movements.
Anganwadi Workers Association state president B R Jayalakshmi said that the implementation of the project would have a dangerous impact on the people of the district and women in particular. The association will intensify the protest in the days to come, she warned.
