Law Minister T B Jayachandra’s efforts to persuade religious heads to call off their hunger strike at the Freedom Park here failed on Tuesday.

The agitation by 200-odd pontiffs of various mutts across the State, seeking an anti-superstition law, entered the second day.

The pontiffs were in no mood to listen to the minister’s requests and said the government had to make its stand clear on the legislation.

Jayachandra said, “The matter will be discussed with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and a decision will be taken. We need two days.”

The pontiffs agreed to the deadline but said they would continue the protest on Wednesday.
