Recalling the incident where a woman banker was attacked in an ATM kiosk in the City in 2013, the High Court on Friday gave a dressing-down to the State police, saying that the department knows ‘nothing more than beneath-the-table business.’
Hearing a petition by a resident of Mysore, challenging the police orders to a bank not to release the jewellery pledged by him with it, Justice A N Venugopalagowda said, “The accused is seen in a CCTV footage assaulting a woman in a City ATM centre. She survived with great difficulty. Despite the fact that the face of the accused was visible, the police could not trace him till today,” the judge said.
‘Nothing is done’
“Instances of chain-snatching and purse-snatching are rampant in the City. But nothing is done to prevent them. You are taking public money as salary. You should have minimum concern about them at least. Is your department so helpless with the system?” the court said.
Citing a recent incident where Rs four lakh was seized from a government servant in Kolar, but was let off when he said that he had got a loan, the judge said that to borrow money, the government servant needs to obtain permission.
“Your department does not know anything other than beneath-the-table business,” he said.
