The residents of Guggalmari, Hirekodagali, Hanumanal and SB Gudur villages in Hungund taluk of the district are reeling under Malaria.
In the past one week, the doctors have confirmed as many as 172 cases of malaria are reported in the region. The district administration and the Health department have taken adequate measures to treat the patients and precautions to bring the epidemic under control.
More disturbing is the fact that most of the confirmed cases have manifestations of Plasmodium Falciparum. Deputy Commissioner P A Meghannavar told Deccan Herald that four medical teams including two physicians and paramedic staff, have been dispatched to the villages. Two clinics have been set up at Guggalmari and Hirekodalagi villages, he said.
Fogging is being carried out in the villages. Gambusia fish species are being released into quarry pits to control mosquito larvae, the DC said.
District Malaria Officer Dr Jayashri Yemmi told Deccan Herald that as many as 1,012 persons from the four villages have been subjected to tests. Of which, 172 persons have returned positive . District Health Officer Dr Rajkumar Yeragal said the quarry pits filled with rainwater have turned into a breeding ground for mosquito. Over 170 quarry pits are the root cause for the PF malaria in the region.
