Belagavi: Female lion Nirupama housed at Kittur Rani Channamma Mini Zoo at Bhutaramanahatti village in Belagavi taluk died due to old age and multi-organ failure on Thursday (February 6).
A detailed postmortem examination was carried out and the carcass of lion was disposed of as per the guidelines of the Central Zoo Authority.
During postmortem, damage to the respiratory systems and liver was observed.
Range Forest Officer Pavan Kuraning said Nirupama was among the three Asiatic lions that had been brought to Kittur Rani Channamma Mini Zoo on February 25, 2021.
Then she was ten years old. People coming to the zoo had been taking her pictures and was the centre of attraction for visitors. There was surge of visitors after the lions were shifted to the zoo.
Deputy Conservator of Forests and Executive Director Maria Christu Raja, Multi Speciality Veterinary Hospital, Belagavi Senior Veterinary Officer Dr Hanamant Sannakki, Regional Research Officer Dr Shrikant Kohalli, Veterinary Officer Dr Nagesh Huilgol and staff of Kittur Rani Channamma Mini Zoo were present.
