The city police on Friday arrested two men who tried to convince a person that they are selling gold for half price. They claimed that they stumbled on a gold treasure in a river.

But the person grew suspicious over the two men — Jeevan Lal Solanki (35) from Nagpur and Devi Lal (50) from Ahmedabad — and alerted the police.

The Mahalakshmi Layout police said the accused first showed original gold to one Parameshwara with the assurance that they have plenty of the yellow metal stocked up, which they got from a river.

Parameshwara asked them to show the rest of the gold and discovered that it was gold covering on copper jewelry. He alerted the police, and Solanki and Lal were arrested.

The police have registered a case and are probing similar crimes by the two suspects.
