The customs officials at the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) arrested four persons, in different cases, including a South Korean national and recovered over 2 kg of gold worth Rs 61 lakh from them.

The suspects had used various methods in an attempt to smuggle including concealment of gold inside a high-pressure foot pump in the check-in baggage, gold foils in chocolate wrappers, gold powder mixed with mud and paste to hoodwink officials, the Additional Commissioner of Customs, Harsh Vardhan Umre said.

According to the officials, a passenger named Saifullah Shaik from Kadapa arrived at the KIAL from Bahrain. On scanning his check-in baggage the officials observed dark images. On detailed inspection, a high-pressure foot pump with gold pieces was found inside the pump. The total quantity of gold recovered was 874.430 gm valued at Rs 27.03 lakh.

The others arrested include a South Korean, a man from Andhra Pradesh a passenger who landed at KIA from Abu Dhabi on Thursday.
