Five members of the infamous Dandupalya gang were produced before the special court at the Parappana Agrahara jail on Thursday after the high court ordered a retrial pertaining to double murder and dacoity in Mangaluru.

The special court had sentenced Dodda Hanuma, Venkatesh, Munikrishna, Nallatimma and Krishna to death in 2012 for murdering Lucia De’Mello and Ranjith Vegus at Urwa Marigudi in Mangaluru on October 12, 1997. The high court which heard the convicts’ appeals observed several inconsistencies in their statements and ordered the lower court to conduct a retrial.

The five men, lodged in Belagavi’s Hindalaga jail, were produced before the special court with police protection. Public prosecutor B S Patil submitted that there is enough evidence that all the five were involved in the crime and sought the death penalty for them.

The advocate representing the accused sought time to make his arguments. The judge adjourned the case until October 26.
