An 80-year-old man stabbed his wife to death and attempted suicide in full public view in Kuvempu Nagar, Gangammanagudi, in the City on Sunday afternoon.

The deceased has been identified as Kalavathi (70). According to the police, she was the second wife of the accused, Subramanya. The police said that Kalavathi lived with her daughter in Kuvempu Nagar and was eking out a living by working as a maid in a nearby house.

The police said that Kalavathi was walking home after work around 3 pm, when Subramanya stopped her and started abusing her in public.

He later took out a knife and stabbed her in her abdomen. He then stabbed himself in his chest, the police added.

The police said that both of them were lying in a pool of blood and passersby rushed them to a hospital.

The doctors declared Kalavathi dead on arrival while Subramanya is stated to be critical, the police said. It is learnt that Subramanya was a chronic drinker who frequently abused Kalavathi and pestered her to give him money, added the police.

A case has been registered in Gangammanagudi police station.

Man stabbed by love rival
A 25-year-old man was stabbed by a person over a love affair near Jayanagar 9th Block on Saturday evening.

Police said the victim, Fazil, had a heated argument with a friend who had asked him to stop talking to a girl as he (the friend) was courting her. Fazil asked him to mind his own business.

The suspect suddenly took out a knife and stabbed Fazil and fled the spot. An injured Fazil was taken to hospital by passersby but his condition is stable.

Police said they were looking out for the man who attacked Fazil. Both Fazil and the suspect work as daily wage labourers. A case has been registered at the Tilak Nagar police station.

6 held in betting racket
The CCB police arrested six people from a rented house in Vasanth Nagar for running a betting racket on horse races in the Mumbai Turf Club.

The police, acting on a tip-off arrested Bharath, Johnson, Mahesh, Sumer, Maniyan and Jameel. They seized Rs one lakh in cash, a laptop and 18 mobile phones.

According to the police, the arrested conducted the betting through online web portals. They gathered details about the horses and jockeys from various sources, said the police.
A case has been registered at the High Grounds police station.
