Breaking norms and trying out something new and quirky is always fun. When it comes to recreating a classic trend, denim has always been on the top of the list of sartorial experiments by designers.

Looking at denim in ways other than the quintessential jeans, designers and youngsters are experimenting a lot with this fabric these days. With many versions like skirts, ruffle tops, shirtdresses, jogger pants, dungarees and even palazzos, denim has reinvented itself as a versatile fabric. Ashika Haresh, a first-year student of CMR College feels that denim has always been an investment, be it in the form of jeans, shirts or dresses.

“Denim is a statement in itself and these days we have so many options. Apart from the classic bell bottom pants making a comeback, now we have prints on them. One can also find slashed and washed and even other fabrics blended with denim,” she says. Known for its durability,  this fabric can now also be seen in accessories like bags, belts, wallets and even shoes.

Aparimita, a student says, “It is always a safe choice especially when one can’t decide what to wear. I am a big fan of dungarees and skirts and there can be nothing better than one in this fabric. It is tough and gives out a rugged yet chic look.”

Looking away from heavyweight denim, which is restricted to only winter wear, designers are now more keen on exploring light weight denim which is ideal for all seasons. Blending it with different fabrics like rayon or silk makes it more versatile and functional.

Ankita Thakur, a student of Mount Carmel College says that with denim, no one is ever under dressed or over dressed. Denim on denim and denim with floral print  looks extremely stylish, she says. “There are denim shrugs with embroidery or patch works and badges that look quite fashionable and oomph up one’s style statement”, says Ankita.

To this Leah Iychettira adds, “I am very comfortable and confident in denim as I can pair it  with almost everything. I see a lot of my friends wearing different variations of denim. This is getting increasingly popular with college students.”

Diana Joseph, also a student at Mount Carmel College says that having at least one denim outfit is a must for every fashionista. “Denim effortlessly complements the white-sneaker trend and this combination  makes one look edgy and powerful.”

Agreeing to this is Priyanka Jain, a professional. She says, “The fabric is funky and cool and works amazingly with both casual and formal attire. This apart, the lightweight denim is perfect for Indian Summers and suits any body type.”
