Efforts should be made to irrigate the lands and clean up village ponds, Prof Y S Rajan, Dr Vikram Sarabhai Distinguished Professor at the ISRO headquarter, said while delivering the
Dr Satish Dhawan Memorial Lecture on Wednesday.
They should also address the urban usage of water, including that of public use and industries. He felt that the Indian engineers must start contemplating on using modern plastic liners to reduce wasteful leakages and persistent use of drip or sprinkler systems to reduce the need for water to the minimum.
“But capital costs can be higher; some government funds are available. Also single local pump systems can be used...many more ways to reach water; I am not unaware of the poor electricity supply in most areas,” he admitted.
Rajan further added that solving the problems of village ponds and having real environmental friendly solution would lie in providing a good quality potable water using sound engineering techniques which could go a long way in boosting the economy, society and people.
